Don’t give off YOUR best.

When you aren’t giving off THE best and you bask in the glory of average performance, you are said to be mediocre or exhibiting mediocrity.

Naa Ashorkor (actress/presenter in Ghana) wrote this lovely piece on the most popular social networking site, facebook : “If you try to fit in, you can never stand out”.

In practical terms, you CANNOT be great at everything. Picture this situation where one person is the best footballer, best presenter and best doctor? How can that most possibly be?

Everybody’s got unique talents and gifts. Michael Essien may be one of the best footballers in recent times but he may NOT be the ideal personality to consider when looking for a great presenter for the Miss Ghana Show. You need to make sure that where you are great at, you are REALLY the greatest.

It doesn’t matter where you’re from or which country you are in. Mediocrity must not and should not thrive! Mediocrity never gets you to the top.
Some of the big wigs in recent times who showed mediocrity the door are namely Jennifer Aniston, David Beckham, Halle Berry, BasketMouth, Genevieve Nnaji, Kofi Annan, Jackie Appiah, Yvonne Nelson, Doreen Andoh, Jessica Omane Saforo, Samini, Michael Essien, Agya Koo, etc. The list is endless.

If I want to become a presenter (and in actual fact, I do), I should be the best presenter Ghana and the world has ever seen. If you want to be a doctor, you should be the best doctor, better than your predecessors. There’s nothing like trying to be like someone even if that person is great. You must be an original best.

There is a saying on the wall at my ad agency reception which reads: “Life is too short to be mediocre”. My agency may not be the all-superlatives kind of agency but I try to ensure (as much as possible) that whatever I contribute to the drawing board is my best, my very best.

Sometimes it may be very difficult not to be mediocre in your current work environment. But you must strive. Cos’ the ones who were and are average never got noticed.

Don’t give off YOUR best. Your best may be mediocre. Give off THE best.

If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to flow. Thanks.

  1. Ama Akoto, nice blog! I am so happy for you. I've always wanted to have my own blog but i still haven't found a theme for it yet.
About the article, u are right u know. society has a way of putting us in a box and placing us in a particular shelf. Unless that path is ur ambition, it is your duty to show them you don't belong there by doing the best that can be done. If not, u are settling and you deserve to be placed in that box and in that shelf!

  3. Very inspirational and sensational
    (O.B-Stunneress). Lemme add
something small. Do not be all
things to all men, be yourself,
don ’t try to be what you are not
and hold dear to the things that
    you strongly believe in. You
cannot achieve anything in life if
you don ’t have a vision of what
you want to do, who you want to
be and just as importantly, how
    you want to get there.
It is very important to have
someone you look up to but
mind you, you can never be like
him. It is either you are better
than he is or vice versa. Each and
every one has his own unique
feature that is why it is said that
all fingers are not the same. You
    must never under rate yourself
just because you did not get the
    opportunities others had.
    Brighten the corner wherever you
find yourself and always strive for
the best. Like Mrs. Jackson used
    to say ‘Desire, Determination and
    discipline will surely earn you
    success.
A vision without an execution or
    implementation plan will forever
    remain a dream. Work hard
towards your dream to make it a
    reality. Delete the words
    Mediocrity and impossible from
    your dictionary and always think
positively. NAS, in one of his
songs said ‘I know I can be what I
wanna be. If I work hard at it I’ll
    be where I wanna…’ Remember
that it is God who makes all
    things possible. BIO says so.

  5. well said Nana Ama ,as they say 'DONT BE A JACK OF ALL TRADES,MASTER OF NONE'. To live above mediocrity one must have 'A DRREAM' first, without a dream you will just follow the herd. Alot of people fall into mediocrity because i believe they are scared to be different, trying to meet other peoples expectation. Many people have told me 'Kwadwo this song is cool, its dope nonetheless but it wont sell; make something for the club; use autotune it's what everybody is using these days. Then i ask myself, will be happy with myself writing an 'ass or tit song' versus trying to kick knowledge? I choose the latter because its what satisfys my soul. Living the next mans life is a bad way to live your own life. Do what you love, whats best and right for you not what is safe incorporated with hard work and the man upstairs and you will definitely achieve greatness. Before i get into anything i ask myself, will i engage in this activity if i had a few months to live? If the answer is NO, then off to the curb it goes!!! I love your office password hahahaha!
